概要 | This paper provides a framework for understanding the learning motivation process of academic writing and oral presentation skills of PhD students enrolled at a Japanese national university. The paper investigates students' perceptions of learning English to publicize their research findings in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Data were collected, coded and analyzed recursively through in depth semi-structured interviews with twelve participants enrolled in three different disciplines selected from three faculties. Results show that students regard themselves as disadvantaged due to their limited proficiency in English. However, many of them are not motivated to study the foreign language due to their belief that English plays only a secondary role in scientific research as well as their lack of confidence in their ability to write papers and deliver oral presentations in English under pressure. |
