概要 Numerical study is conducted on the enclosed swirling flows within a cylindrical container. The swirling flows are driven by the top lid motion which rotates at a constant angular velocity. These flows are known to exhibit vortex breakdown process for limited ranges of two primary parameters, i.e., the Reynolds number Re and the container aspect ratio h. Based on the wealth of numerical solutions, the distribution of swirl angle is plotted and compared with the experimental data. In accordance with the empirically known vortex breakdown condition, i.e., the swirl angle exceeds a certain critical value is necessary for the occurrence of breakdown, numerically obtained swirl angle always exceeds a certain value at the edge of vortex core and the agreement of this vale with the experimental data is quite good. Recently proposed criterion by Lopez is examined in detail and possible explanation for its validity is sought by evaluating the relative magnitude of the momentum equations.
